What is Shamanism?

Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and a way of life, connecting us with nature and all of creation. The word ‘shaman’ (pronounced SHAH-mahn) originates from the Tungus tribe in Siberia and refers to a person who’s able to interact with both the normal world and the world of spirits, usually as a sort of intermediary between the two.

A healing modality that dates back at least 50,000 years, shamanism addresses the spiritual aspect of illnesses and imbalances of the body, mind and soul. Shamanic practitioners work in the realm of spirits. In order to receive messages from the spirits, they journey into hidden, invisible realms that lay beyond the physical reality we inhabit. The fact that Shamanic practices across the globe are remarkably similar suggests a universality of wisdom that transcends race, culture, belief, historical context or lifestyle.

ABOUT THE WIRED SHAMAN

The partnership between shamanic practitioners and their benevolent spirits remains sacred in Core Shamanism. Asking our helping spirits for assistance with the pure desire to help ease the pain and suffering of others causes amazing power and healing to be exchanged from them through us to others.

In a time when the internet facilitates many of our exchanges, it makes sense for me as a shamanic practitioner to include it in my Shamanic Toolkit because I can use it to pass along the messages I receive from my helping spirits to help others find their path to universal energy and healing. Interestingly, the internet was created by scientists around the world who were studying particle physics in order to exchange vast amounts of data quickly.

The internet allows me to traverse great distances in mere seconds to connect with clients.  It affords clients the opportunity to book sessions, regardless of where they are physically located. Many people prefer to experience their Shamanic session in the privacy and comfort of their own home. Distance healing sessions are very powerful. Nothing is lost; the connection during distance healing sessions is instant and strong. Many times clients say they can feel or sense my presence in the room with them. Geographic distance is a non-issue to the helping spirits and the natural world.

The natural world is a wondrous place that often shows that the confines of the human world do not exist for elements in Nature. Consider, for example, the fascinating science of how trees communicate. They’ve been described by one researcher as “relational miracles all their own,” constantly communicating with one another through chemical signals dispatched along the fungal networks that live in their roots – an invisible, astonishing underworld only recently discovered. That’s more interesting still when you consider the importance of nature to shamanism. Clients usually find that their connection to Nature and the natural world strengthens as a result of their Shamanic sessions.

While no special settings, tools, rituals or ceremonies are needed to practise shamanism, my ‘shamanic toolkit’ for a session may include therapies that complement and support my work to aid the body’s own ability to heal. Those therapies include the following:

Aromatherapy: This complementary therapy uses genuine essential oils made from essences found in the flowers, leaves, roots, peel, resin, seeds and bark of some plants to improve both physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Lavender and chamomile, for example, can help relax people who feels anxious or stressed. Aromatherapy has been a trusted practice among cultures across the world for thousands of years.

Crystal healing: This complementary therapy involves the application of crystals and/or gemstones on or around the body to facilitate healing.  Each crystal has different energies. Rose quartz, for example, is known as the ‘love crystal’ and is commonly used for attracting and keeping love and to heal your heart from disappointment and pain. Desert rose can be used to access past and future lives.

Healing touch: This is an energy therapy that uses gentle hand techniques to help restore the patient’s energy system and accelerate healing of the body, mind and spirit. It’s based on understanding that human beings are fields of energy that are in constant interaction with others and the environment.

Reiki: Often referred to as ‘energy healing,’ reiki involves the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to a client, whose own energy may have stagnated in the body due to physical injury or emotional pain. By directing the flow of energy, the reiki practitioner helps a client maintain or return to energetic balance, so they achieve physical, emotional and spiritual health. Reiki can also help to facilitate positive energy at an event.

The Wired Shaman

I view shamanism as ancient wisdom that can be interpreted for modern living. Given the fact that shamanism has endured tens of thousands of years with core traditions intact, it’s no surprise it can be interpreted to resonate with our own experiences.

What you can expect from a Shamanic session…

People seek shamanic treatments for any of a number of reasons, including relief from grief, stress, depression and physical ailments. Some are simply curious about shamanism and appreciate the energy boost it provides.

My work typically begins with an email from a client in which they identify the issues they are seeking to address with shamanic assistance. With that client’s permission, I journey and connect with my helping spirits for advice and direction on that person’s priorities and to make sure the time is right for them to receive treatment. I then share with the client the results of that consultation to ensure the client understands and is comfortable with the proposed treatment.

If the client decides to proceed, they books an appointment for a session, either in person in at my office or a distance healing session. Shamanic treatments aren’t intended to take the place of a medical doctor’s care and don’t interfere with any medical treatments a client may be following under a physician’s care. I don’t diagnose or treat injuries or illness and don’t prescribe any medications.

Many illnesses or conditions have a spiritual component and the spirits may help alleviate a client’s pain and suffering. Typically, a shamanic session begins with the practitioner calling in the spirits using a rattle while the client relaxes. I ask my healing spirits what healing this person needs right now and from that point on, I do what they tell me. I’m not doing the healing; I’m the connection.

From there, I will utilize the shamanic healing practices in accordance with the instructions given by the the healing spirits during that session. Every shamanic practitioner develops their own treatment style based on their own experiences.

About Shamanic Healing Treatments

Based on the instructions I receive from my helping spirits a shamanic session may include one or more of the following healing practices:

Shamanic Healing: As part of this treatment, I connect and consult with my helping spirits to determine if shamanic healing is recommended for the client. If it is, I seek direction regarding which shamanic treatments are recommended.

Shamanic Divination: This is the practice of seeing and interpreting signs in everything around us about events past, present and future from a higher source.

Power Animal Retrieval: The shamanic practitioner journeys into the spirit world on your behalf to meet with your power animal. Once the power animal identifies itself, it will release some of its power to the practitioner, who will restore that power to you by blowing it into your chest and crown.

Shamanic Extraction: This treatment involves removing energies that have been picked up in the course of living that don’t belong to us or serve us. Removing this displaced energy facilitates greater well-being and may alleviate specific ailments and/or a sense of being ‘blocked’ energetically. People often report greater mental clarity, and feeling lighter, more energized and more at ease in themselves following this treatment.

Soul Retrieval: This treatment reintegrates soul parts that have departed from an individual, sometimes because of trauma that caused their energy to fragment and flee for safety, only to end up trapped in the locate of the trauma or adrift in the world. The individual may feel a lingering sensation that part of him/her is missing or an aching pain lodged in his/her body.

Shamanic Drum Healing: This treatment allows the healing power of spirits to pass through the drum to the client.

Psychopomp: A sudden and unexpected death, a deep attachment to a person or family, or a strong desire to complete unfinished business are among the reasons why an individual’s spirit may remain on earth after death. A shamanic practitioner can help and/or guide those souls to where they need to go.
